Invitation to International Conference “Body and Care in the Ordeal of War”

From 12 to 14 November 2025, the international conference “Body and Care in the Ordeal of War” will take place in Prague (CEFRES, Na Florenci 3). The event will explore the transformations of the body, health, and care in wartime and post-war contexts throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

The conference is organised by the EURETES Research Alliance “War and Society: Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th–21st Centuries”, of which the Institute of International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, is an active member contributing to the preparation and organisation of the event.

The programme includes thematic panels devoted to physical and psychological injuries of war, care for veterans and civilians, gendered dimensions of care, and humanitarian aid and public health policies.

The keynote lecture will be delivered by Prof. Sarah D. Phillips (Indiana University).

The event is jointly organised by CERCEC – EHESS, CEFRES, the Center for Urban History of East Central Europe, the Institute of International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, and the Research Centre Ukraine / Max Weber Foundation.
